Peter Cummings has been commissioned to provide the furniture for
Welcome to Yorkshire’s courtyard garden at the 2010 RHS Chelsea
Flower Show (25th to 29th May).
The garden is a quirky take on the classic dish of ‘rhubarb crumble and
custard’ inspired by Yorkshire’s ‘Rhubarb Triangle’, which produces
Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb and has recently been awarded Protected
Designation of Origin by the European Commission, joining the ranks of
Champagne and Parma ham.
The relaxing and informal garden is created from traditional and natural
materials and celebrates Yorkshire’s produce, craftsmanship and famous
landscape. The main focal points within the garden are an oversized bowl
of rhubarb accompanied by a chair in the shape of an equally oversized
spoon. Standing at four feet high and weighing 68kg, the spoon, made
from solid oak, provides a striking sculptural feature.
A small cylindrical table and a wall seat add further functional elements.
The garden will also be exhibited at The Great Yorkshire Show (13th to
15th July) before being transferred to its final home at RHS Harlow Carr
in Harrogate at the beginning of August.
